Are you wondering how to find a domain name for your website? well, let’s take a look at the impact that it will have on your website. Some time ago a domain name was everything when it came to getting rankings in the search engines, but that has changed today.
A few years back if you had an exact match domain (EMD) say for e.g. “makemoneyonline.com” you would have a big number of people searching this term and as a result you would easily get ranked on the first page of google. The trouble with this was you could get high rankings but not necessarely have good quality content on your site or maybe no content at all for that matter.
Google decided it was time to make changes to this system because they didn’t want websites ranking high in their result pages with little or no quality content on them, so now if you want to get good rankings in google there are a number of techniques that you need to implement both on and off your site.
This is known as, “search engine optimization” (SEO). Therefore getting an exact match domain these days has little benefit on it’s own, because you won’t get ranked in the search engines without implementing good SEO techniques.
There are benefits to having keywords in your domain name:
- Identifies what your website is about
- Easy to recognize/remember
- Can help with rankings
- Become bolded in the serps
But just keep in mind In order to get ranked in google you will need to implement good SEO no matter what type of domain name you have for your website.
The other type of domain is a brandable domain. A brandable domain is one which you can build your own idenity, build out your own website into a brand name, one which your audience and the search engines can come to know and trust over time.
That does’nt mean you cannot put your keyword into your domain, by all means if you can find a suitable domain that’s not already taken with a keyword relating to your niche, then go for it.
It will take time to build your own brand, so don’t expect to have an authority site built over night but, this really is the way you should be building your business online.
If you take the time to work on this then your website will become an authority site within your niche and your domain name will get recognized as a result, this is a better alternative than trying to get your website recognized through having a popular domain name.
Choose a name that identifies with your niche, what I mean by that is when somebody sees your domain name they should know what your website is about or at least what it is in relation too. At the same time don’t be to clever trying to come up with something that is perfect, keep it simple, relevant and easy to pronounce.
Avoid These in Your Domain Name
Sometimes it can be tempting to put in hyphens and dashes or something similar because the name that your looking for has already be taken.
It is best to avoid this and here is an example why.. say you want the domain, “makemoneyonline.com” and it is already taken, and you decide to go with “make-moneyonline.com”, people typing the domain are likely to forget about the hyphen and end up going to a site that has nothing to do with you, so try and keep your domain name as simple as possible to type and pronounce.
Advantages to Short Domains
Keeping your domain name short has it’s advantages, for e.g. it will be easier for people to remember, share, and type-in a domain that is short. Also long domains when shared in social media can sometimes get shortened and you cannot see the full url.
In my opinion a short domain name with a keyword can help with getting recognized and ranked faster in the search engines, but that’s not to say that a longer domain won’t, that will depend on a multitude of other factors.
What Domain Extension Should I Choose?
When choosing a domain the .com extension is best if it’s available, if not then .org or .net. would be an alternative, but if you can get the .com extension it will have more advantages because it is more recognizable for the ordinary person surfing the web.
It also seems to be the extension that is most trusted by people and the search engines, making it easier to get ranked in the serps (search engine result page).
When choosing your domain name you should try to avoid infringement with other websites especially authority sites that have a trademark name. You don’t want a situation where some company are taking issue with you for having a similar domain or trying to copy a domain of theirs that already has authority or recognition in the online world. So try and keep your domain unique, this is why it is important to build your own brand of which you can be proud.
Indexed in Google
Once you register your domain name and it get’s indexed in google then you don’t want to change this again, because this could and probably will cause you to lose rankings in the search engines and this means losing traffic that you have built up over a period of time.
After reading all of the above content your probably sorry you asked about a domain name! but it is important that you choose the best one possible for your website, especially if you are intending building out your own brand as this will be your online business for years to come and your domain name is the address that your audience needs in order to find you.
